In August 2011 the group posted a statement on its website saying it was calling it quits after 10 years. The breakup was blamed on Wade McNeil’s decision to join
Gallows following Dallas Green’s announcement a year earlier that he was leaving the group to focus on City and Colour.
“Replacing one guitar player/singer/writer was something we thought was possible, but replacing two would run the serious risk of perverting the legacy of what we had achieved,” vocalist George Pettit wrote. “So we all took a good hard swallow and decided to end it so it would never get old and ugly.
“Was the break up amicable? Not really. Was it necessary? Probably. Regardless, the members of this band and my family and I wish them nothing but good fortune.”
In the statement Pettit wrote that the band had talked about “doing a final run of shows in Canada as a farewell tour.”
In addition to several Canadian dates, the farewell tour also includes shows in the United Kingdom, Brazil and Australia.
When announcing the dates for the farewell tour this week, Alexisonfire made sure to tell fans that the band was not permanently reuniting and that the December tour would be its last time taking the stage together.
