With less than a month before Hardly Strictly Bluegrass returns to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, it’s time to go over the 2012 lineup. This year the free festival features a solo set from Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Justin Townes Earle, The Head & The Heart, Patti Smith and her band, and many more acts.
The 2012 edition marks the first HSB since founder and benefactor Warren Hellman died. In 2008 he promised fans at HSB that the festival would live on for at least 15 years “after I croak,” thanks to an endowment he established.
The financier started HSB in 2001 as a one-day event when it was originally called “Strictly Bluegrass.” Days before he died from complications of leukemia in December at age 77, the S.F. Board of Supervisors officially renamed the festival’s main stage area in his honor from Speedway Meadow to “Hellman’s Hollow.”

Set for Oct. 5-7, this year’s festival takes place at Hellman’s Hollow, Lindley and Marx Meadows in Golden Gate Park.
Hellman, who performed at the fest with his band The Wronglers, will be remembered with a set dubbed “Tribute to the Founding Fathers: Warren Hellman, Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson.”
And The Go to Hell Man Clan, which is made up of Hellman’s grandchildren and other family members, will take the stage with special guests the Wronglers featuring Jimmie Dale Gilmore.
