Shakira’s Legal Wrangling

03:01 PM Thursday 9/13/12 |   |

Shakira’s legal team is a tad busy handling two lawsuits from different sides. In the first case, the Colombian singer is suing former long-term employees Maritza Avila and Diwier Hernandez for extortion and defamation of character.

The lawsuit claims the couple has threatened to leak private videos of Shakira and her boyfriend, Gerard Pique, unless they’re paid $150,000, according to Colombia Reports.

The couple’s lawyer, Abelardo de la Espriella, told the publication his clients deny the extortion claim. They allege Shakira fired them in May because they refused to cook a meal in the middle of the night, and they say she hasn’t paid them benefits due.

The other legal filing comes from the singer’s former fiancé/manager Antonio De la Rua allegedly seeking $250 million.

De la Rua says he gave up his career as a publicist to handle Shakira’s business affairs, which includes the pop star’s lucrative contract with Live Nation, according to Colombia Reports.

Shakira’s reps claim De la Rua is attempting to freeze the singer’s assets as compensation.

De la Rua’s lawyer told the publication the legal filing isn’t a lawsuit and addresses the end of the business relationship that continued for about a year after the couple’s personal breakup after 11 years.
