More than a week after Frederick “Toots” Hibbert was struck by a bottle thrown at him by an audience member in Richmond, Va., Toots & The Maytals has postponed the remainder of its spring tour.
The 70-year-old singer/songwriter was in the midst of an acoustic performance at the Dominion Riverrock festival May 18 when a 19-year-old member of the audience chucked a large vodka bottle at him. Hibbert was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for a cut to his head before being released.
But Hibbert may be experiencing more medical issues. An announcement from Toots & The Maytals indicates the reggae master is seeking “additional medical treatment” and that he is still “undergoing tests and treatments” resulting in nixing the remaining tour dates.
The same announcement promises the shows will be rescheduled for later this year after Hibbert is “given a clean bill of health from his doctors.”
“Toots appreciates all of the well wishes and support from his fans and looks forward to performing for them again soon,” the message said.
Richmond police have charged 19-year-old
idiot alleged bottle tosser William C. Lewis with aggravated assault and public intoxication, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Postponed gigs include May 29 in Annapolis, Md., at Rams Head On Stage, May 30 in Ithaca, N.Y., at State Theatre and May 31 in South Orange, N.J., at the South Orange Performing Arts Center.
