Holmes had recently addressed his fans and friends in an open letter as he moved into hospice care.

He and his brother Sherman formed The Sevilles in 1963, then backed acts like John Lee Hooker and The Impressions before meeting drummer Willie “Popsy” Dixon at a New York gig in 1967.

They proceeded to play together in various bar bands until they formed The Holmes Brothers in 1979, touring the world and releasing 12 albums.

Dixon died in January of complications from cancer; Sherman Holmes continues to tour with The Sherman Holmes Project featuring Brooks Long and Eric Kennedy.
