Hardly Strictly Bluegrass’ Initial 2016 Lineup

04:30 PM Thursday 8/11/16 | |

The first batch of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass artists lined up for 2016 includes Cake, Mavis Staples, The Infamous Stringdusters, and Rosanne Cash.

San Francisco’s “totally free” festival takes place Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at Golden Gate Park’s Hellman Hollow and Lindley & Marx Meadows. Tickets are not needed.

The festival is continuing its tradition of unveiling the lineup via a series of music medleys. After having fans submit guesses for a few days, organizers confirmed the acts listed above, along with The California Honeydrops, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Bobby Bare, Elephant Revival, Buddy Miller & Marc Ribot, and Mother Hips.

The next medley is “coming soon.”

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass was founded and subsidized by private equity investor F. Warren Hellman, who passed away in 2011.

“I describe the festival frequently as the world’s most selfish gift. It’s a fantastically selfish gift, but it is a gift,” he said during a 2006 interview with Forbes.

“There are hundreds of thousands of people there who are appreciating it. Just being able to do something that is completely not commercial, that is pure, hopefully, pleasure for the participants – to create a surrounding where the musicians and professionals like it as much as the crowd does. How could you have more fun than that? What the hell is money for if it isn’t for something like that?”
