Honda theater is too "live" an auditorium for a group like this. Concert scheduled to start at 8:00PM. Had a boring warm-up band and finally they came out a little before 9:00. Then... OMG those taffards played a bunch of new sounding jazz stuff for the first hour, we were ready to leave. Then they picked it up a little bit and ended the concert. For the encore they did three more nothing songs, and that was it. The NEVER played "Realin' in the Years", or "Ricky Don't Lose That Number". A very expensive ($165 for each so-so seat), took two hours to drive there, $5.00 for a Diet Pepsi. Definitely not worth it.

Outdoor concert in Tucson in July? Sure! Anselmo Valencia Tori Amphitheater (AVA) at Casino Del Sol is a great smallish venue, the reserved seats are covered and after the sun goes down there's a nice breeze. A big owl cruises the rafters as we wait for the show to begin. The opening act is a trio of organ, keyboard and drums. They play a couple of original jazz compositions and finish with a short blues tune, all played very tightly. The leader really makes his organ sing. I get the feeling this band is not setting up for your typical 70s pop band that gave us Rikki Don't Lose That Number. The Steely Dan band opens with an instrumental medley, starting with a funky version of Everyone's Gone to the Movies. With four horns and two vocalists on top of rhythm, they have a great sound. Then Walter & Donald come on stage and the band goes through a varied selection, ranging from early works through Fagen's solo phase up to their 21st Century release Two Against Nature. The crowd is dominated by the 40-60 age group who probably frequent AVA for the Doobie Brothers, Journey, and other bands of their period now touring. Many fans happily hold up their laundry during the "You got your Steely Dan tee shirts" lyric in Show Biz Kids. But this was not an oldies show. Never your mainstream rock band, Steely Dan has been progressive for 30 years and sounds very modern indeed. Most impressive, they continue to attract heavyweight musicians. This band is nothing but power, from longtime top-shelf trombonist Jim Pugh to newcomer drummer Keith Carlock who did Aja justice from start to finish. Fagen & Becker are not who they are for stage presence, which may be what has led to the string of awesome guitarists who join them. Jon Herington is no exception. Although he looks like a 50-year-old nerdy cardiologist, he could keep up with the likes of Eddie van Halen--not the over-the-top virtuosity but the musicality, dynamics, effects, and tasty licks. When's the last time you saw a rock band tuning on stage mid-set? They sounded fine to me, but Donald stops to ask for an "A" and all the horns & strings check. Walter steps up for lead vocals on Gaucho, which is a rather low point, but he's the one I'd most like to have lunch with. Donald I'd send off for the brain clone so we can start a whole new generation of genius composers. For the encore I was rather disappointed with FMinstead of Bodhisattva or Haitian Divorce as I had read they often do. Like the Hometown Buffet, there are just too many good things to choose from. On the whole it was an incredible treat. Now I gotta go get on iTunes and grab a few I don't have. Other tunes in the set Parker's Band Josie Peg Hey Nineteen Third World Man Royal Scam Kid Charlemagne
