The Ting Tings Concert Review Every now and then I take a break from head banging in order to enjoy the infectiousness of 80’s Pop/New Wave. I know, it’s a bit of a shocking revelation, and many fans of Heavy Metal who have emailed me how much they enjoy my rock articles probably now view me like I am committing adultery on Rock and Roll. However, 80’s bands like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, New Order, Love and Rockets and O.M.D. offer a melodic sound that is just too inviting to ignore. Lately, the music industry is undergoing a rock resurgence with bands like Hinder, Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman attempting to emulate the rock sound of the seventies and eighties. Though their approach at recreating Hard Rock falls short, less mainstream bands like MGMT and The Ting Tings have successfully created a cyclical sound quite reminiscent of 80’s New Wave. While watching the Victoria Secret Fashion Show this past fall, a poppy little number called That’s Not My Name by The Ting Tings played while a bevy of beauties strutted the stage. At first, I found the song to be rather irritating, but its hook stayed with me and I could not seem to get it out of my head. I told myself I would not download the song, but soon broke down. I am very pleased that I caved in to my weakness for 80’s sounding Pop because I discovered a refreshing album – The Ting Ting’s debut album, We Started Nothing. The Ting Ting’s are an English duo, comprised of lead singer and guitarist Katie White and drummer Jules De Martino, who sound like the hybrid offspring of ‘Til Tuesday, The Go-Go’s and Animotion. On Friday, April 3, 2009, The Ting Tings played The Pageant in St. Louis appeasing fans aching for the days when Sixteen Candles was number one at the box office. Originally, the show was scheduled for The Blueberry Hill Duck Room, but due to popular demand, the concert was moved to The Pageant in order to accommodate a larger crowd then initially expected. Oftentimes bands claim to be duos and trios, but when you see them live they bring out extra musicians to help recreate the sound you hear on the album. However, The Ting Tings are honestly a two-piece band and nothing more. With the help of a few looping pedals, Martino and White delivered an excellent show that kept the audience dancing throughout the set. I went in with very low expectations since The Ting Tings are so new to the scene, but was greatly impressed with the duo. Jules De Martino showed off his ability to multitask when he would play guitar and drum at the same time, and Katie White entranced me with her seductive guitar playing and sexy English accent. The Ting Ting’s played their entire album, which included such favorites as Great DJ, That’s Not My Name, Shut Up and Let Me Go, and We Walk. The group certainly does not have the virtuosity of a band like Iron Maiden, but they write their own songs (something I hugely respect) and have created a clever sound in an era when quality music is teetering on the edge of extinction. A three-piece rapping girl group known as HotTub opened the show with a dreadful performance. HotTub looked like a bag lady version of the Beastie Boys, but sounded like a crude version of The Spice Girls. While the three girls rapped, a clone of the guy on the couch in Half Baked stood behind a turntable laying down the beats for HotTub. The mix master looked oddly out of place because he seemed like the type of guy that I would run into at a KISS concert. The best part of HotTub’s performance was that the turntable guy played on his cell phone and casually sipped from a Budweiser bottle the entire set, exhibiting no enthusiasm for his craft whatsoever. Basically, HotTub’s performance came across more like a skit on Saturday Night Live rather than a band you can take seriously.

Go see the Ting Tings if they come to your town. They are absolutely incredible! I was a bit skeptic about them at first, but WOW!!! Not only were they mind blowing musically, but, the absolute fun level they bring to a show was just amazing! Go Go Go!!!
