The Tabernacle: one of the many creations/music venues brought to Atlanta from the original venue hosts, Alex Cooley and Peter Conlon but due to time and attrition eventually this, along with the other venues, came under the runnings of CC Entertainment. The Tabernacle once a church, sense the name, is located on Luckie Street downtown Atlanta. The setup here is fairly unique. Upon entering the front doors you are faced with many options, doors and stairwells to follow. Straight ahead takes one to the lower rungs (the basement), which is a separate venue, The Cotton Club. The main floor is located up the first flight of stairs. Continuing up the stairs several side rooms and a main landing up top or foyers as called in a church building except one difference here, these are filled with people buying drinks, merchandise etc. and not church goers awaiting repentance or a sermon, which these folks might be seeking this come Sunday morning. Before actually making it to the stairwell I noticed the length of the line before the doors opened. It wrapped around Luckie Street to the intersection of Walden Ave. To say the least, there was a warm ‘buzz’, eager fans and a hell of a wait to get inside. A few weeks back I was able to make it out to several venues, head shops, and clothing stores to put up posters and leave postcards to raise awareness of the new album and the show. Being here before for other LH and non-LH artist I felt I knew the arrangements here and what I needed to do to set up. So I thought!?!? The difference tonight is it wasn’t general admission and the fact of not being able to carry things in freely which must have had something to do with special guest appearances; we’ll get to that later! As I waited for my tickets I spotted one of the merch guys outside for the Tab. We talked for a minute and I was able to pass him the postcards, matchbooks etc. to take in for me. He set most everything at the merch table and I was able to go from there. They weren’t allowing me to put up posters of any sort so I used those after the show for some lucky attendees in hopes Ryan would sign them. I left some matchbooks at each bar, about 6 or 7 bars total, and also laid out some postcards in various rooms, bars and side rooms. My seats were on the floor and I sat waiting for the first act while listening and crowd watching. It was interesting to watch people, listen to their conversations about Ryan and his music. I noted the fact that some people picked up some postcards from the various areas and I think it helped create more conversation about the new album etc. I would encourage other teamers to set out some postcards prior to the show to encourage conversations and atmosphere to gain more awareness. Show Heather Luttrell whom I’ve seen many times on Saturday nights at a small dark bar called ‘The Royal Oak’ opened. Just her and a guitar set the atmosphere for what was to come. Heather played for about 45 minutes. The opening act over brought more to the audience for which they awaited the main act to take stage. Finally taking stage around 9:40 Ryan opened with Sweet Carolina and jokingly closed with only this one song. He left the stage, or attempted but soon returned to continue on, which I’m more than glad he did. Ryan next played Sweet Lil' Gal, To Be Young... The Fools We Are As Men and then did a cover of Brown Sugar. Chain smoking, drinking wine and keeping the crowd amused Ryan out performed many! Bringing the crowd to laughter and comments, he told the crowd he was going to play an album on his records player selection of the album was up to the audience by way of cheering. Album one was Madonna, ‘Like a Virgin’ another album I never heard him say the name though, and album three Black Sabbath. Though more cheers for Black Sabbath he continued to say he was still going to play Madonna. Putting the album on and playing Like a Virgin, he put on an impressionistic style that reminded me of a child trying to sing and play guitar, (though that statement is far from the truth Ryan is an incredible artist.) Dancing, laughing and making the crowd laugh and applaud Ryan gave us all much needed entertainment and fun show. Switching between the more acoustic album Heartbreaker and a bit more electric Gold, he next played Bartering Lines then went onto Sylvia Plath bringing out two fine female musicians, Ruth and Sarah. They accompanied him by playing cello and violin. Keeping the gals on stage with him next was When the Stars Go Blue. Not to mention the Corrs and Bono do a nice cover of this but it’s still not better than the original. Next from the new album the new Dear Chicago followed by Call Me On Your Way Back Home. Not able to stay away from the record player Ryan then put on Black Sabbath he performed playing air-guitar, throwing his hands in the air and rocking out. Hank Williams Lovesick Blues seemed only fair to sing after Black Sabbath so there it was. What happened next was incredible. Let me set this up first. A baby grand piano was on stage which at the beginning Ryan commented on his lack of great piano playing ability so who other to help out than piano’s friend Elton John. Playing La Cienga Just Smiled the crowd went ape. Everybody’s up, running to the stage frantically calling friends and family on cell phones. Lighters a blaze and girls screaming gave everyone a new energy. At the end of this performance they left the stage. Ryan only returning to finish with a powerful encore, Rescue Blues. Playing a new song and gaining the help of a crewmember to hold the lyrics for his just written song Twice as Bad as Love, Ryan stammered on. The final two were You Will Always Be the Same and Come Pick Me Up. This was a show never to be missed and one to remember. Staying around after the show to finish handing out goods I had. I headed around the side and finally ended up near the bus. I passed postcards to the crowd as they left and listened to everyone still star struck from the spectacular performance. When the postcards were out I ventured to the bus area and gave a few fans the last of my posters for the new album in their hopes to get them signed.

Despite having to drive from Cleveland to Detroit, Adams delivered a very intimate show. One could feel as though Ryan was in his room playing guitar with vinyl spinning in the background. I saw him once with the band and now without, and as Adams put it "I don't need no stinkin' drummer." And he didn't and he doesn't. Sylvia Plath was done twice, well 1 1/2. Ryan did it the studio version first then later on in the show did it with a very impressive "Cookie Monster" voice. And lucky enough for R.A....no one cut their wrist as he suggested they might at the beginning of the show. Although he did get a request for "Summer of '69" at which point Adams had the house lights turned on and told the man "Here's $30...you can leave now."
