The Rolling Stones: Bigger Bang Tour Mosaique Stadium, Regina, Saskatchewan October 6/06 5 out of 5 Stars Satisfaction Had By All The Rolling Stones’ Bigger Bang tour unfortunately bypassed Winnipeg, but the new owners of Mosaique Stadium in Regina pulled off a coup by landing the Stones for the very first time in Regina’s history for two sold out shows. I was fortunate enough to land tickets for the Friday show which sold out almost instantly. When I arrived in Regina on concert day, the impression was that God or the Queen had landed there. Huge spotlights which could be seen for miles, blazed above the stadium, heralding the band’s arrival. Over the course of two shows – 80,00 plus fans (does Regina have 80,000 people?) would file into the stands to be met by an imposing 98 foot high stage (the biggest built and as high as the stadium’s grandstand) accompanied by the world’s largest portable jumbotron. The stadium looked like a mini city and the excitement was palpable. Three Days Grace opened the show with a tight energetic short set to luke warm reception. They performed well, but there was no question who the overwhelming majority of fans came to see. The warm up act finished as darkness enveloped the field. After a few technical delays, the stadium lights darkened and the crowd roared. Booming fireworks lit up the night sky; smoke blanketed the entire stage; the jumbotron flashed 3D space images as the Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards strode onstage to a thunderous ovation and weaved through the instantly familiar opening riffs of “Jumping Jack Flash.” Another massive roar ensued as showman extraordinaire Mick Jagger burst through the fog, swaggering and gesticulating wildly as the rest of the Stones emerged. The bad boys of rock and roll punched their way through material culled from the entire gamut of their forty-four year history - from early Brian Jones era hits like “Get Off Of My Cloud,” to Mick Taylor era chestnuts like “Midnight Rambler” as well tracks from their new CD “A Bigger Bang.” The Stones finished the night with “Start Me Up” segueing into their “Sticky Fingers” smash hit “Brown Sugar.” For their encore, they returned to perform the haunting “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” followed by Keith Richards leading the band out with (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. Like the great blues artists that they themselves admire such as Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and John Lee Hooker – the Rolling Stones – like vintage wine – seem to improve with age. As a result, “satisfaction” was had by all. Rob Rheubottom Winnipeg, MB tarryrob@yahoo.ca

The Rolling Stones at a Sold Out Skydome on Friday, October 18th 2002 was in a sense more of an event than a concert. The crowd who came looking for Rock n Roll Satisfaction ranged from 9 to 90 as parents were taking their kids and in one case (the people sitting in front of me) 40 something kids taking their 60 something parents! The stage wasn't as elaborate as their Voodoo Lounge Tour however it did the trick. The video screens were incredible and the pyro was a nice touch. Sadly, the Pyro received more of an ovation than anything the stones did. Charlie received the biggest response from the crowd when Mick ran throught the band introduction. Keith was introduced last and his mic mix was muddy making it hard to decipher exactly what he was saying although we all got his drift. He ran through soome lounge lizard track that put everybody back in their seats then proceeded to start another number and before you could say "Happpy" he launched into a ska number that didn't go over so well. Mick was suspiciously nowhere in sight during Keef's time at the mic. The transition from main stage to a smaller stripped down stage in the middle of the Skydome Field was impressive especially since they started their "mini stage" set with the "Some Girls" chestnut "When The Whip Comes Down". One obvious attention getter was during "Honky Tonk Woman" when the Stones lips and tongue logo transformed into animated porn on the giant video screens. Slightly predictable but a pleasant surprise all the same. It showed they still have an taste for the seedy side of Rock n Roll. Keith's solo or lack of a solo in Jumpin' Jack Flash was tough to witness. He was either out of tune, had bad tone or no moniters when it came time for what I thought would be a smoldering solo. Keith's reaction was a look on his face that read "Aww F**K" After which he flailed his arms off and back from his Stratocaster and pulled off one of his trademark open chords. To make matters more painful he seemed pissed off that MIck didn't jump back in with the vocal soon enough in order to finish the song. When Mick didn't take his cue from the obvious blunder Keith (Standing Behind him on the Stage) Harshly signalled Mick back to his microphone with a hand gesture that resonated with a "C'mon now!get up there and finish this one off!!! He didn't look happy and rightfully so. It's safe to say Mick and Keith are still at odds. It was apparant that Keith and Ronny still enjoy each other's company on stage as they were getting into some physical horseplay with each other looking like a couple of old west guitar slingers having a ball. Charlie Watts was the rock of the band for the entire 2 hour show. Constantly commanding attention with the smack of his snare drum. He was in fine form for 61. On certain arrangements Charlie would take the tempo anywhere he wanted to whatever level he wanted whenever he wanted thus controlling the excitement level of the entire show. In summation, they did what they're paid so well for. They rocked with an unabashed fervor. Looking like timeless craftsmen during anything but just another day on the job. By the time they plowed into the first encore which was "Satisfaction" the 49,ooo plus in attendance realized they were just that, Satisfied.
