Rory Block is brilliant. She captivated the audience which gave her strong applause for all her songs and a standing ovation at the end of the show. It is no accident that The Blues Foundation has said that "today she is widely regarded as the top female interpreter and authority on traditional country blues worldwide." She electrified the audience with songs by Son House "County Farm Blues" and Robert Johnson "Last Fair Deal Gone Down". Most of her two set show were from her new album "Last Fair Deal." She brought in some poignant stories from her personal life in the song "Sookie Sookie" and "Spider Boy". She is a virtuoso of slide guitar and even gave a tip to those who can't find a slide to fit a small finger. . . get a socket wrench! She uses her metal slide on her left ring finger and really works the entire neck of her acoustic guitar. She also displayed some superb fingerpicking throughout the show. She was having some trouble tuning her new guitar strings between songs but she is such an artist that even her tunings were music to the ear! She plays sitting in a near classical style. She concentrates hard on her intense, vibrant, driving sound. Still there is plenty of motion to watch. What an experience! Pure emotion. Pure soul. Her slides and vibratos sing! She did stand to deliver one highly emotional acapella gospel song she had written. This displayed her incredible voice. Great range, great feeling. No wonder she has been nominated for the WC Handy awards http://www.blues.org/handys/ as Acoustic Blues-Artist of the Year. Her new Telarc album "Last Fair Deal" has been nominated as the Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. A dog lover, (she has four which travel with her),Rory mentioned that her share of the proceeds from her soon to be released Martin signature guitar will go to animal charities. This guitar will have reinforced threts to accommodate vigorous slide players. All in all, my wife and I had a great night. We even met "Mama's Stray Baby" Beauxregarde in person. If you want to see her dogs, visit Rory's website http://www.roryblock.com and click on the "Doghouse". Her site includes real audio clips from "Last Fair Deal" and "Two Places at a Table" for 128k mp3 download. To sum up . . . if you get a chance to see Rory Block in person, go! And bring a friend. If you love the blues, you will be seeing the best. If blues isn't your "cup of tea", see Rory Block and I guarantee you, you will be hooked!
