Yes, Rik was in Chicago at the House of Blues last week. What a great show! Rik came out full on electric and when he opened with Fight the Good Fight and Somebody's Out There medley with Saved by Love (from his first solo CD) I knew we were in for a special evening. My first time at HOB Chicago and it couldn't have been better. Stand right up front or lay back near the many bars - either way was awesome. Rik mixed in solo work and some acoustic in order to "rest his pipes" and he was hilarious during his between song banter. Triumph fans left happy as he made sure (as he promised he would) to play them all. He told us Chicago has always been a special place to him, and at the show's end we were told to Hold On to that Magic Power. Friends always figure I am talking about some other great, three piece Canadian rock band, (hmmm?) when I talk about Triumph. But Rik solo, as a condensed version of Triumph, smokes. Well, at least in Chicago he does – smoking is still allowed in bars here – but not anymore in Canada.

I'm usually artist friendly but when I heard it would just be Rik & pre-recorded backing tracks I wasn't too happy. But with an amazing voice & even better guitar playing I was won over. Rik told as many stories about the messed up state of the music industry as I really cared to hear but they were interesting. He told the crowd that he'd now been out of the band Triumph longer than he'd been in it! 14 years to 13 years. His music since he left Triumph is mostly accoustic & instrumental. He did have to deal with the typical idiot shouting out the name to every Triumph song ever recorded. Emmett did please the crowd with spine chilling renditions of "Ordinary Man" & "Lay it on the Line". There was something in the setlist for everyone & all in all it was non-stop entertainment for 90 minutes!
