After enjoying and owning the man's music for years, I finally got to see him live. The best thing I can say about this show is it started on time and it mericfully ended after about 90 minutes. The band while technically good had no energy and it was virtually impossible understand the words to the songs. I have probably seen thirty nationally known artists perform live in the last year and this was with out a doubt the most expensive and biggest disappointment. Brilliant artist, terrible show!!!

If you go to see Van nowadays you need to know a few things. First off, he is going to go on promptly at the time listed on the ticket. I don't care if it's a Saturday night, if your ticket says 7:30pm, you better be in your seat at that time. Secondly, he plays for exactly 90 minutes following a digital clock that sits right offstage. Third, his current set lists (saving the special HB shows) consists of about 70% of his newer material (say the last 10 years). All of that being said, this one of the most magical concert experiences of my life. I don't think Van even acknowledged the audience once but it didn't matter. His voice and his band were in top form. Unfortunately in the last few years since I saw this show his ticket prices have started to push the $250-$350 range to get anywhere near the stage. A bit too much for me to go again, but i'll cherish this night in San Francisco.

I too was fortunate enough to attend both of the Hollywood Bowl shows last November after making the trip from Florida. Both shows were marvelous, but the first night was truly extraordinary, without question the finest show I have ever heard from him. The non-Astral Weeks set was just as impressive as what would follow, featuring both Troubadours and Angeliou back-to-back. The Astral Weeks material was presented in a more natural running order, not the same one from the album, and this gave the set an excellent emotional flow. Both the CD and the DVD from these shows are fantastic as well and are highly recommended. Van remains at the top of his game, and his shows are definitely worth traveling for.

First of all, I was at both of the Bowl Shows and I can tell you from years of Van shows all over the world, that these were absolutely two of the finest shows and most memorable for a multitude reasons. As to the comment from one, that Van only visits the US a few times a decade -- Van Morrison has been performing live for nearly 40 years and has always toured the US most recently throughout the country in the past 3 years in NY, LA, SF, Detroit, Chicago, MN, Nashville... I could go on.
Finally, Van pours his soul into the music, is very focused and doesn't interact with the audience but I can tell you he's totally into the moment and if the vibe is right as it was in LA -- you are going to bare witness to a musical masterpiece and Astral Weeks live was just that. I would HIGHLY recommend the upcoming live release and future Van tours in NY in Feb and any other European or US shows you can see. Van is a legendary treasure. Bless him!
