not really sure what the concert date was last year but,,,

Lucinda has got it back, new relationship, new prospective on performing. I almost gave up on seeing Lucinda after seeing her a few times about 6-7 years, her new band is rocking. She actually now has music stand in front of her with lyrics, i guess she feels more comfortable with the words right there and consequently adds a lot to her live shows. Much different vibe than her past performances, know that these shows should be appreciated, much like when Dylan 'found' his groove again in the the early 1990's, for me Lucinda will be a must see every time she comes to town from now on.

The Hendrix cover was "Angel," in honor of Hendrix' drummer Mitch Mitchell, who had recently died.

Wow. Lucinda Williams never, ever fails to disappoint. I hate to use the hackneyed 'gets better with age' cliche, but the fact of the matter is, Lucinda's performances get better as her band gets tighter and as her catalog grows and she has more material from which to choose. Let's be honest, she doesn't have a discography as big as other artists who've been around over 30 years. This was the 2nd time I've seen Lucinda live at the Wiltern (capacity ~2300) and the third time I've seen her overall. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Wiltern, it's one of those old, golden-age era concert halls (which for Los Angeles means it might actually be.... ....50 years old (though I'm sure it's older) with the classic marquee, pavilion style foyer, sweeping staircase to the mezzanine, reliefs on the walls, etc. The acoustics are actually pretty good, and it seems to support sounds as various as (from artists I've seen there) Elliott Smith (r.i.p.) and Iggy & the Stooges. Lucinda is a master of pacing and building anticipation. She started with more slow/mellow numbers, and some fans who've never seen her before may've thought they were in for a sedate evening (and possibly even a let-down?). Hah! Slowly, as the set progressed, she started weaving in older and harder numbers, including her fantastic cover of the great Randy Weeks song "Can't Let Go". The fans went crazy for "Honey Bee", which I think is an okay song but not one of her better ones. But when she laid "Come On" onto the audience, you'd have thought the band was channeling Crazy Horse itself with the crunchy Neil Young riffs. It appears that members of her band have decided to incarnate as Buick 6, and they did an opening set that consisted exclusively (if I recall correctly) covers: Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, and others. Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs (who is still hot!) came on stage to sing, and in Lucinda's set were on stage to help her with some other numbers. In the context of a brief observation of the state of America and hope for its imminent future, she covered the Buffalo Springfield classic "For What It's Worth", to the delight of the crowd. She also did a solo acoustic guitar solo of a Hendrix song, that I can't recall. The slow burn from early set to late set numbers were really solid proof of what a master of pacing she is. Her acknowledgment of the classic rock artists (whom she covered), and of the presence in the city of Aretha Franklin shows how grounded she is in the roots of rock, yet her music is obviously country-inflected and she is 'in' with the slightly younger generation (Sweet, Hoffs). She always manages a perfect show, somehow. I'll never miss Lucinda Williams live.
