Harper and Midwest Kind, October 8, 2009 I had the pleasure of attending the Discovery Music Series at Attucks Theatre in Norfolk Virginia last night to see Australian singer/ songwriter Harper and his amazing band Midwest Kind. The opening act was very good, but when Harper hit the stage the magic really started to happen. He performed brilliant original song after song. He told stories and had us all laughing. The jamming and individual solos of the various band members was just fantastic to see. Harper ''s voice was powerful and soulful - His harp playing was nothing short of genius and to top it off he plays a mean didgeridoo. My personal favorite song was "One Day" which has a didgeridoo / timbale solo. The interplay between the didgeridoo and timbales had the crowd on its feet. We were also treated to some stunning four part harmonies through out the evening. Harper is a top class act thats for sure. At the end of the show, the audience all stood up and screamed their appreciation. We had a great night and certainly hope to catch another Harper show very soon.

HARPER & MIDWEST KIND @ CHENANGO BLUES FEST, NEW YORK I caught Harper & his band Midwest Kind at the Chenango Blues Festival in Norwich, New York back in August. All I can say is WOW!!! His music is a unique mix of blues/ funk and rock with a dash of World Music just to make things tasty. Harper is an amazing harmonica player- he seems to play the instrument so effortlessly and performs some very complex rhythms and scale patterns. Its like he plays the harp like a guitar. Im not normally a fan of the harp, but this guy takes the instrument in a whole new direction. His music is entirely self written and his lyrics explore modern themes in politics and he has a a real empathy for the Australian Aborigines. Harper's use of the Australian didgeridoo in his music, just makes him even more interesting as an artist. He plays the instrument very well and blends its deep woody tones into a very unique tribal bluesy formula. Harper is also a powerful vocalist and probably the stand out vocalist of the entire festival. To top it off he has a brilliant band backing him- "Midwest Kind' from Michigan. All great players and a timbales/ didgeridoo jam to boot. Harper is an extraordinary perfomer who is sure to turn many more heads next festival season. Didgelady ( a new fan)
