Beck's show at the Hollywood Bowl was amazing. Spoon and MGMT both put on excellent sets before Beck came out and the crowd was absolutely pumped. Beck's set was broken down into 3 or 4 sections. The first was with him and a 4 piece band that was more of a straight rock set. For the second part the whole band came down stage for about 5 songs in which they all had hand held drum machines and 808's. The third section was a solo set that Beck played with the L.A. Philharmonic. This was my personal favorite part of the show. For the final part of the set the band came back out and the L.A. Phil left the stage. It was an amazing show... truly a night to remember.

How on earth did Beck hook up with a bunch of talentless losers like The Flaming Lips? The Lips opened the Vancouver show with 30 or so audience members dressed in animal costumes waving flashlights on stage, a series of repulsive videos and egos the size of Manhattan. Beck emerged about 9:15 to play some solo acoustic songs but was soon joined by the dreaded Flaming Lips, the leader of which seemed to think he was co-headliner! Beck's songs were marred by more flashlight antics. Beck played only one hour and 15 minutes and there was no encore. For $55, this was a rip-off. Mikebee

The Flaming Lips opened for Beck, played for an hour and left the stage before Beck came out for some solo work. After several songs, Flaming Lips appeared behind the curtain and joined Beck for the rest of the show. Fans looking for the electronic pulse of Beck may be disappointed. The aim of the tour was a stripped down rock show, not the DJ Swamp style spectacular of the past. Loser, 2 Turntables and a host of songs from Sea Change rounded out a great show with the Lips really shinning and enjoying the venue and crowd. This tour with the Lips echoes the more mainstream sound of Beck's latest album, but a better back up band would be tough to find.

It's not a scene from "Puppetmaster 2006." It's Beck on stage at the Loews Theatre in Jersey City, N.J. AP Photo / Jersey Journal
