Antje Duvekot, Club Passim, 47 Palmer Street, Cambridge Massachusetts, 15 July 2004. In her first headline performance at the world famous Club Passim, Antje Duvekot (pronounced Ahn-tyuh Doo-vuh-kott) http://www.antjeduvekot.com said she was very surprised by the "sell out" crowd. She said she feared she might performing alone just for Matt, the sound engineer. She shouldn't have been. Thanks to WERS, http://www.wers.org Emerson College Radio's "The Coffee House" (88.9 FM and web streaming 6-10am EST Monday-Friday), she has had daily airplay for the last year or so fueled by Antje's fan requests. Two songs are especially popular. First, her Jack Kerouac "Long Way" describes a journey across America in a beat up old Chevrolet Cavalier. Second, her "Streets of Soho" highlights the feelings of a young woman from Iowa on coming to the Big Apple. And the fans were not disappointed. They chuckled and laughed heartily at Antje's self-deprecating humor throughout the show. An example -- she said she was honored to follow in Bob Dylan's footsteps at Club Passim. Antje kidded the audience that her CDs were easy to find since they were filed alphabetically just before his! Antje started the show with a song about unrequited love, “Dandy Lion”, in which she says she is “the fourth of July” . . . and she truly sparkled. Her versatile, emotional singing always fitted her wide range of songs in many tempos, themes, and moods. The show improved upon her first CD (Little Peppermints) which gives a good feel for her live performance since it includes some of her charming repartee. Unlike many singer-songwriters who are very predictable from one song to the next, Antje produced a variety which kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the evening. She played acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and a RISA uke stick. She has recently been experimenting with intriguing, innovative uses of electronic amplification. She was also ably assisted during the middle half hour by electric guitarist Noah Weinstein. Antje ended the show with her incredibly poignant depiction of her grandmother's Alzheimer's illness in "Anna". This is not a song that is likely to get much airplay because of its heart-wrenching theme. But, as someone with first hand experience of the disease, it is one of the most eloquent moving and beautifully sung poems about this dreaded disease. As the show ended, the audience cheered and clapped for about two minutes and called Antje back for two curtain calls. The very appreciative fans probably would have been kept Antje on for more but no doubt recognized just how much soul and energy she had put into this mesmerizing ninety minute performance. In short, this was a smash hit Passim headliner debut. No doubt Antje Duvekot has a brilliant career ahead of her and many, many more Passim shows.
