Date of Concert: 7/11/2006 | Location: Columbia, MO, USA

Star date: July 11, 2006. Estimated time of arrival: 1900 hours. Closest known location: The Blue Note (in the Columbia, Missouri galaxy). Approximately 750 earthlings appear to be filtering into aforementioned building…but wait… Houston, there appears to be a problem.
The problem at hand appears to be that 30 Seconds to Mars, the headliner of Tuesday night’s show, appear to be lacking the basic skills to perform a set that could in any way be construed as a valid form of musical performance. When 30STM took the stage late Tuesday night after an introduction that ate up at least three minutes of their set time, it was apparent that any hopes I may have had that the band would have honed their performance skills since the last time I was subjected to the torture that is seeing them live were dashed. As the band struck up the first chord of their opening number at an extreme volume level that could only have been some sort of attempt to cover their complete inability to reproduce any of the sound that is featured in either their first self-titled album or 2005’s “A Beautiful Lie,” it was obvious that 30STM was still riding on the coattails of the brief fame that was experience by lead singer Jared Leto during his stint on “My So Called Life” and his deranged part in the cult classic film “Requiem for a Dream.” In truth, it is a bit unfair to judge the rest of the band based on the oversized ego of their lead singer because without his presence and his extreme lack of a lower vocal range, the three supporting band members in the “Jared Leto Show” actually managed to bring a fair level of intensity to their performance in spite of the fact that the songs largely didn’t resemble the songs as they were produced on their albums. In point of fact, at one point during the “performance” Leto actually had the gall to recite lyrics from a the Nine Inch Nails song “Closer” proving yet again the power of his ego in the sense that he thinks of himself worthy of reciting lyrics written by the genius that is Trent Reznor. Perhaps if he got on his high horse and rode it in the direction of a vocal instructor, he could properly perform his songs and thusly wouldn’t be grouped into a category of bands in the current music scene that appear to be trying to kill the ever dwindling spirit of rock and roll. Oh, “what a beautiful lie” indeed.
