Blue Oyster Cult made their return to Winnipeg (9/24/11) with a brief but powerful set of classic songs, playing before the 5000+ strong crowd at the MTS Centre. Still fronted by original singer - guitarists Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma, the veteran rockers kicked off the night with a tip of the hat to their Canuck audience, performing their nod to the RCMP from 1973’s Tyranny and Mutation, “The Red and the Black.” Going with the tried and true, the band kept the heat up (pun totally intended) with their 1981 Fire of Unknown Origin hit “Burnin’ for You, featuring plenty of fiery riffing from Dharma” followed by a goateed Bloom growling through the Black Sabbath influenced “Cities on Flame with Rock and Roll,” from BOC’s 1972 self-titled debut album. They kept up the monstrous pace with 1 of their most well known tracks, their ode to Japan’s most famous monster, “Godzilla,” from 1977's Spectres, and wrapped up the “short but sweet” set with their signature song, immortalized on the Christopher Walken Saturday Night Live “More Cowbell” comedy sketch – the 1976 hit, “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper.” Paul Rogers along with Bachman and Turner had the unenviable task of following BOC, but the 3 acts combined to give Winnipeg the best night of 70s classic rock that Winnipeg will likely see this year.

BOC was always a little more cerebral than most hard rock bands of that era. Great lyrics and a catalog that contains quite a bit of variety. They played all the hits and broke out some lesser known gems like Lips in the Hills. Buck's lead guitar is still the highlight of the band, while Allan Lanier's keyboards really round out the sound. With Foghat opening the show, it was a double blast from the past. My only complaint...I could've used more cowbell!
