Coachella Announces 2020 Lineup Led By Rage Against The Machine, Travis Scott, Frank Ocean

Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival today revealed its 2020 lineup with Rage Against the Machine, Travis Scott and Frank Ocean leading a bill of some 177 artists who will play on two consecutive weekends (April 10–12 and April 17-19) in Indio, Calif. Other acts announced include Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, dance-pop superstar Calvin Harris, crooner Lana Del Rey, rapper 21 Savage, U.K. dance twosome Disclosure, rap breakthrough artist Megan Thee Stallion, genre-bender FKA twigs and composer Danny Elfman, who are among a wide-ranging undercard and who this year were honored with the iconic lineup poster’s second largest font size (see below).

Now in its 21st year and produced by Goldenvoice/AEG, Coachella is consistently the world’s top grossing festival, though it hasn’t reported its gross in two years. In 2017, the last year the festival reported, it grossed $114.6 million with 250,000 fans catching the fest. A combination of switching to two weekends in 2012, expanding its capacity and raising ticket prices has kept it ahead of all comers.

We’ve had a fun run and we’ve taken it farther than we ever dreamt,” Goldenvoice co-founder, President and CEO Paul Tollett told Pollstar in his 2019 Pollstar’s Impact 50 interview when discussing the event’s 20th anniversary. The veteran promoter remains very much engaged in the event. “I still book Coachella and love doing it,” he said. “A big part of it is just making sure the team, the staff, we have a plan. That’s a big focus of what Stacy [Vee, Goldenvoice VP Festival Talent] and I do: make sure everyone around us has the tools to do their job correctly.”

Rage Against The Machine to Play Coachella

There may be no better proof of achieving that aim than the festival’s insatiable demand. This year, like in past, the first weekend sold out with little inkling of who was on the bill, though clearly helping spur sales and promotions was the

early November announcement that Rage Against the Machine would reform for Coachella.

This year’s fest is introducing a presale registration for weekend two which begins Monday, January 6 at noon PT with a 50/50 payment plan. This should come as a relief to many considering the fest’s hefty price tag: Last year’s festival pass cost $429 while the shuttle combo took it up to $509. VIP Festival Passes cost $999 with VIP parking another $150.

 Impact 50: Goldenvoice’s Paul Tollett

True to form, 2020’s Coachella is yet again offering festivalgoers a unique value proposition starting at the top of the bill with two of the three headliners not having toured in years: Rage Against the Machine  haven’t played together since 2011’s L.A. Rising Festival at the L.A. Coliseum, while Frank Ocean last toured in 2017, playing festivals including FYF and Panorama. Meanwhile, 27-year old Travis Scott is one of the hottest road rappers, topping Pollstar’s 2019 Q1 tally and last year grossing $53.5 million.

The lineup also skews young: With the exception of a few veteran artists, including Rage, Elfman and Yorke, the lineup is nearly devoid of Baby Boomers and Gen Xers. Interestingly, some of the older acts include pre-millennium electronic-dance artists, among them Fatboy Slim, Ellen Allien, Erick Morillo and Kruder & Dorfmeister.
