Dead & Company’s Mexican destination event Playing In The Sand sold out shortly after going on sale on Friday.

Less than an hour after becoming available to the general public on Friday, tickets for Dead & Company’s Mexican destination event Playing In The Sand sold out.

Due to “unprecedented” demand, Dead & Company posted on social media that it is “exploring options that would allow us to satisfy as much of the demand as possible. Those options include potentially adding an additional weekend of Playing In The Sand 2022.”

The band encouraged fans to sign up for a waitlist for a potential second weekend of Playing In The Sand.

Announced on April 1 and scheduled for Jan. 13-16, 2022, Playing In The Sand marks the first concerts announced by the jam band – comprised of Grateful Dead founding members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, as well as John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti – since the pandemic began. The shows will take place at Cancun’s Moon Palace resort, in partnership with CID Presents and On Location.

Dead & Company has also partnered with sustainability organization REVERB to make Playing In The Sand a climate-positive event.

Dead & Company’s final performances before the pandemic were at the 2020 iteration of Playing In The Sand. The shows were the third annual and most lucrative installment of the destination event, grossing $18.7 million.

Due to the pandemic, the band canceled its summer tour, marking the first time it hasn’t embarked on such a trek since forming in fall 2015.

Throughout its brief history, Dead & Company has been among the most reliably bankable acts in live, and enjoyed its highest-grossing year yet in 2019, bringing in $68.6 million and ranking No. 27 on Pollstar’s Top 100 Worldwide Tours chart.

While Dead & Company hasn’t staged new livestreams during the pandemic, it has broadcast archival shows through the One More Saturday Night series, and Weir has performed ticketed livestreams with his Wolf Bros ensemble.
