Following an ecstacy sting by undercover police at various nightspots with all-ages events, Mayor Wellington Webb announced The Church dance club is prohibited from hosting teen parties. Police reportedly arrested a man selling ecstacy at the club in February.

“Some might say we are anti-rave or anti-party,” Wellington said. “We are anti-drug.”

Like many states across the country, Colorado has encountered a string of ecstasy-related deaths this year, and the mayor’s actions are an attempt to curb the growing problem.

According to the Denver Post, a 16-year-old girl died after taking the drug and drinking too much water in February. Hours after an electronic dance party earlier this month, an 18-year-old man was killed by a truck while kneeling naked in the middle of a freeway.

As part of the crackdown, the mayor also announced two other establishments that are under investigation for similar drug charges – the Azatlan and the Ogden Theatre. Police apparently purchased drugs during all-ages events at both venues.

However, Nobody In Particular Presents’ Jesse Morreale said the Ogden Theatre, which his company manages, does not host any teen parties.

“The reason we’re being investigated is because we had an electronic music event that was a rental at the theatre. It’s not like it was a weekly thing,” Morreale told Pollstar. “It happened to be on the night the Denver Police Department was doing these stings.”

He said his company is working with the mayor’s office to clarify the situation. “We don’t have any liquor violations and the venue isn’t in jeopardy. We just need to get ourselves disassociated from these things because we’re not a nightclub. We’re a concert hall.”
