John Mayer performs at Madison Square Garden in 2019. The rocker will return to the venue in February 2022 as part of his just-announced “Sob Rock Tour.”

John Mayer released his eighth studio album, Sob Rock, on Friday – and announced a 2022 North American arena tour to go with it.

Mayer’s “Sob Rock Tour” begins at Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y., on February 17, and concludes at Chicago’s United Center on April 28. Along the way, Mayer will hit a battery of arenas including New York’s Madison Square Garden (February 20), Los Angeles’ Forum (March 13 and 15) and Atlanta’s State Farm Arena (April 8).

The tour also includes stops at three Oak View Group-affiliated venues: UBS Arena in Belmont Park, N.Y. (March 1), Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena (March 22) and Moody Center in Austin, Texas (April 20). (Oak View Group is Pollstar‘s parent company.)

Tickets for Mayer’s trek go onsale to the general public on July 23 at 11 a.m. local time. Fans can register for presale tickets through Seated until July 20 at 9:45 a.m. local time, 15 minutes before those tickets become available.

Two pairs of front-row tickets will be auctioned off for each of Mayer’s gigs to benefit the Back To You Fund.

A touring powerhouse for two decades, Mayer’s clout on the road only continues to grow. He notched a mammoth year in 2019, when he landed at No. 30 on Pollstar‘s year-end worldwide touring chart with a global gross of $66.1 million. That included the highest-grossing box office report of the rocker’s career, a sold-out two-night July stand at Madison Square Garden that moved 35,810 tickets and grossed $5.1 million.

In 2017, Mayer enjoyed a similarly strong year, ranking No. 36 on the year-end touring chart with a worldwide gross of $54 million.

Of course, Mayer’s solo touring only tells part of the story, which is rounded out by his touring with Dead & Company, the band that includes Grateful Dead founding members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Since debuting in October 2015, Dead & Company has grossed a staggering $249.5 million, and it’s appeared on Pollstar‘s year-end worldwide touring chart every year from 2015 to 2020.

Mayer hits the road with Dead & Company in a month, for a tour that begins at Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, N.C., on August 16, and concludes with three shows at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl Oct. 29-31. The band will also stage the fourth edition of its Playing In The Sand Mexican destination festival – now expanded to two weekends to meet high demand – on Jan. 7-10 and Jan. 13-16. The 2020 iteration of Playing In The Sand marked Dead & Company’s final pre-pandemic shows, and the event grossed $18.7 million.

Deadheads may be relieved to see a conspicuous gap in Mayer’s calendar come December, leaving open the possibility of New Year’s Eve shows, a longstanding Grateful Dead tradition that Dead & Company carried on in 2015 and 2019.
