This year’s Reeperbahn Festival presents itself as both a digital music industry conference as well as an on-site live event in line with the German government’s COVID-19 mandates, Sept. 16-19.

Organizers around CEO Alexander Schulz and conference director Detlef Schwarte have found ways to implement most of the festivals program points, including conference panels, award shows, networking, showcases, as well as live concerts.
The conference program comprises some 200 international speakers, who will share their insights on most topics concerning the creative industries, such as creative tech, film, marketing, media and journalism, rights management, and, of course, the live business – in particular how it’s been affected by the current crisis.
Only online access to panels is available for registered delegates. A ticket for the digital festival conference costs €21.29 ($25).
The full conference schedule can be found here.

This year, people are asked to maintain a distance of whatever the government mandates during the festival.

Festival tickets for each day range from €45 to €65 depending on the day.
The festival program lists over 150 live concerts, art exhibitions and film screenings, the line-up includes Tom Gregory, Camel Power Club, Daði Freyr, Dillon, Eefje de Visser, Moglii, Plàsi, Tuvaband and Weval.
The participating venues will all operate in a “pandemic proof” way, which mainly means asking guests to wear a mask whenever distancing isn’t possible. Capacities range between 30 and 800 people.
VenuesNow reached out to multiple venue operators along Hamburg’s Reeperbahn, to find out how exactly they were preparing for the event.
The famous Molotow club, for example, is usually one of the busiest venues during Reeperbahn Festival, hosting anywhere from 40 to 60 bands a day during the event.
This year, it’s more likely to be six bands a day, according to booker Fenja Moeller, who said that, in a regular year, Molotow hosts 350 concerts in total.
To track and trace possible infections occurring during Reeperbahn Festival, visitors are required to check in with their contact details once at the ticket desk on site in Hamburg.
They can save this data permanently on their mobile phones, and check in and out at venues via QR code. Alternatively they can print and fill out forms containing their details and leave one at each venue they visit.
All live concerts are streamed for free on reeperbahnfestival.com.
There are usually two awards handed out during Reeperbahn Festival, the ANCHOR (Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award) and the IMJA (International Music Journalism Award).
Plus the EU’s Music Moves Europe Talent Awards reveal the nominees in Hamburg, Sept. 18, which can also be live streamed on reeperbahnfestival.com.
The ANCHOR Award Show is live streamed on Sept. 19, and see IMJA winners will be announced through videos.
