Sturgill Simpson Announces Underplay Tour Benefitting The Special Forces Foundation

As he prepares for the Friday release of his fourth album, Sound & Fury, Sturgill Simpson has announced a six-date U.S. underplay tour that will hit cities on both coasts.

The tour begins at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, Calif., on Sept. 29. From there, Simpson will travel north to the Bay Area for gigs at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, Calif., and The Independent in San Francisco, on Oct. 1 and 2, respectively.

Simpson will then head east for gigs at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg (Oct. 6), Washington, D.C.’s Black Cat (Oct. 7) and Asbury Park, N.J.’s Stone Pony (Oct. 8).

The shows will benefit the Special Forces Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides support to Army Special Forces soldiers and their families.

Simpson has a European tour on the books for late January, but the dates he announced Monday mark his first U.S. shows in support of Sound & Fury.

Simpson’s most recent album, 2016’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, won Best Country Album and was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys. The record also took home Album of the Year at the Americana Music Awards.

Simpson’s upcoming U.S. shows will hit venues substantially smaller than the rooms he played in support of that album. In September 2017, Simpson sold out Radio City Music Hall, moving 5,875 tickets and grossing $261,395, according to Pollstar Boxoffice reports. Less than a year later, in April 2018, Simpson co-headlined the room with John Prine, selling 5,986 tickets and grossing $452,178.

Simpson has encountered similar success elsewhere, from Austin’s Austin360 Amphitheater, where he sold 8,976 tickets and grossed $316,953 Sept. 9, 2017, to Columbia, Md.’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, where he sold 5,309 tickets and grossed $226,512 a week later.
