– Protests Against Police Brutality Over Death Of George Floyd In NYC, New York, May 31.
Protesters demonstrated for the fourth straight night after video emerged of a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinning Floyd’s neck to the ground. Floyd was later pronounced dead while in police custody after being transported to Hennepin County Medical Center.
Most of the world’s major music companies have joined in a campaign called #theshowmustbepaused to show solidarity with the black community in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
The plan is to cease business on Tuesday, June 2 in order to “disconnect from work and reconnect with our community,” as one of the most widely shared posts reads.
Major record labels, distributors and influential execs all created posts in solidarity, continuing the outpour of similar sentiments across social media since Floyd’s death on May 25. With most of the live industry already on hold because of COVID-19 shutdowns, it follows that the majority of music companies taking part in #theshowmustbepaused come from the label side – but others have joined in the cause including AEG Presents and artists like Phish and  Joe Russo’s Almost Dead.
