Stevens had suffered from knee and hip problems when he discovered he had cancer, his son and manager told Pollstar.

Stevens had been performing as Rick Stevens and Love Power until about six months ago.

Stevens was lead vocal on Tower of Power’s band’s “You’re Still A Young Man,” which was the Oakland-based funk band’s first big hit and on its first major-label LP.

He also performed on their first album, 1970’s East Bay Grease.

Stevens left the band amid drug problems and in 1976 shot three men to death in a drug dealing dispute.

He was granted parole in 2012, and had played Bay Area clubs with Love Power.

He was profiled by NBC Bay Area for taking a 12-piece band to perform at a correctional facility to spread the message that inmates could rebuild their lives.
